Harp Lessons in York: A Guide for Complete Beginners and Returning Players
Why Learn the Harp?
The harp is a beautiful and ancient instrument. You can play a wide variety of music on the harp and it sounds beautiful right from day one.
Are Harp Lessons Suitable for Adults?
Absolutely. There is no reason why adults can’t begin harp lessons. As an adult you will probably be more motivated to practise, plus you’ll be better able to transport a heavy instrument yourself.
Can Children Learn the Harp?
Yes, children can learn the harp. In my own teaching studio I start children on the harp at around the age of ten. This means they are likely to be big enough to be able to sit with a lever harp with good posture. It also means they’re mature enough to start working towards good technique. Bonus points if they have already been having piano lessons and have learned to read music.
Do I Need My Own Harp Before Starting Lessons?
You are welcome to come and have your first lesson on my harp, but after that, yes, you will need an instrument to practise on at home.
I am happy to advise on harp purchase. It is also an option to hire a harp initially from somewhere like Morley Harps - visit https://www.morleyharps.co.uk/harp-hire for more information.
I always recommend my students to start with a 34-string lever harp. This gives the best mix of portability and range for playing a good variety of music. Adults will definitely want to make sure they get a harp with detachable legs, to raise the harp slightly for sitting with good posture.

How Long Does It Take to Learn the Harp?
This is a big question! Most people get to approximately Grade One standard in 6-12 months, but try not to compare yourself to others. Playing a musical instrument is a life-long journey and not all of us have as much time to devote to playing as we might like. If you enjoy your lessons and you enjoy playing at home, that’s the most important thing.
Do I Need to Read Music to Learn the Harp?
It is very useful to be able to read music, and I’m happy to teach you how to read music if you’d like to learn. If you are looking for regular, ongoing lessons, you will need to learn to read music, but please don’t worry if you’ve never read music before. It’s never too late to learn.
What Happens in a Typical Harp Lesson?
Typically we’ll have a 45-minute harp lesson. I like to start with either scales or exercises to work on hand position and technique. Then we’ll move on to pieces. I often spend a few minutes each lesson working on Music Theory as well - just to fill in any knowledge gaps and to give you a thorough grounding in Music Theory.

Frequently Asked Questions About Harp Lessons
What age can children start harp lessons?
In my opinion, ten is a good age to start learning the harp. Children tend to be big enough to sit properly and hold the harp with good posture at that age.
How often should I have lessons?
The gold standard for progress would be a weekly lesson.
Which type of harp should I buy?
I’m happy to discuss harp purchase or hire with you - have a look at the video above for more information.
Can I learn for fun rather than taking exams?
Absolutely! Exams aren't for everyone. Regardless of whether you’d like to take exams or not, we’ll still work on technique and pieces that are appropriate for your current level.
