I teach piano and harp from my family home in Acomb, York, in a dedicated music room with a comfortable waiting area for parents.
👧 Who are lessons for?
I teach children and adults, from beginners through to more experienced players. I teach many absolute beginners, as well as adults who learned as a child and for whatever reason stopped playing for a while. It’s never too late to pick it up again.
📅 How do lessons work?
Lessons take place at a fixed weekly time during school term-time, giving students the consistency they need to make steady progress.
I currently teach across 38 weeks of the year, with payments spread evenly over twelve months to make budgeting simpler.
Lesson length and fees
Lessons are available in 30- or 45-minute sessions, depending on the student's age, level and individual needs. I'll recommend the most appropriate lesson length when we discuss your requirements.
30-minute lessons are often ideal for younger beginners, while 45-minute lessons allow more time for repertoire, technique, theory and musicianship, and are particularly useful for more advanced students.
🎶 What can students expect?
My lessons combine enjoyable music-making with a strong foundation in technique and musical knowledge. Students work on a diverse repertoire of pieces while developing their understanding of theory, musicianship and good practice habits.
I'll give you clear guidance about what to work on between lessons, so you know exactly what will help you make progress.
🎹 Piano lessons
The piano is a wonderful and versatile instrument. I teach on my Knight upright piano and encourage my students to make sure they have an instrument to practise on at home, either a digital or an acoustic piano. We’ll go through the fundamentals of learning to read music as well as getting into good habits with technique and musicianship.
Harp lessons
The harp is such a striking and unusual instrument, and it sounds beautiful right from day one. As with the piano, we’ll also learn how to read music and the basics of music theory if we need to. I can advise on harp hire or purchase so you can have an instrument to practise on at home. I recommend starting on a 34-string lever harp.
